Arnot Hill Park in Arnold has been awarded a Green Flag for the second time. The Green Flag Award is a national award which recognises the best parks and green spaces in the country, and is a sign of an excellent, well managed and customer friendly park. The park has continued to evolve over the last year, with a number of projects recently completed, including installing a floating reed bed to improve the pond’s eco-system and a comprehensive bird monitoring system – the park has now been registered with the British Trust for Ornithology to help monitor wildlife activity. The birds have also benefited from the installation of new bird boxes thanks to generous donors. Invaluable support is given by the Friends of Arnot Hill Park who help manage and maintain the park. It is a popular visitor attraction with a range of facilities for the family, including a wildlife pond with a range of popular and rare breed birds, refreshment kiosk, a skate park and play area, rose and sensory gardens, ball court and aviary. Each year the park plays host to Arnold Carnival, which is now in its eighth year. Attendances at the event in June were in excess of 28,000 visitors. The park also hosts an annual play day event with Nottinghamshire County Council, for children, young people their families, carers and support workers. Over the last five years there have been a number of improvements carried out at the park. This has included improvements to the lake, the provision of a new refreshment kiosk, a new skate park facility and play area, restoring the rose and sensory gardens, updating a range of planting schemes, reinstating the walls around the park, refurbishing the gatekeepers lodge and making improvements to the lighting as well as improving security through CCTV cameras.
