Belly dancing at County Hall

BELLY dancing, Caribbean food and chair-based yoga were all part of an event held at County Hall to mark the UK and International Day of Older People. The event is now in its fourth year and around 250 older people attended, including representatives from the Golden Eagles. Below we captured Alan Langton and Grace Millar with the County Council’s Service Director, David Hamilton, and senior civil servant, Charles Massey, from the Department of Work and Pensions.

They were joined by young people from Gedling and Newark, including members of the Gedling Youth Assembly. As well as dancing, eating and exercise, there was a chance for people to play Wii games, indulge in pampering sessions, and learn safer driving techniques.

Information stands as well as activities made the event at County Hall both enjoyable and useful for those involved in Over-50s groups like the Eagles.

The September meeting of the Golden Eagles saw a presentation on disabled parking permits, the County Council’s blue scheme rules and the approach to overseeing parking by the new, council employed wardens. There was also an interesting presentation on Discovery Awards aimed at the over 50s from Christine Johnson who had progressed through bronze, silver and gold awards. The challenges at each level reflect Service in the Community, Recreational Pursuit, Hobby or interest, and Journey of Discovery.

At the end of October the Golden Eagles are to pay a return visit to the Kirkby-in-Ashfield seniors group for their “Haunted Halloween” event.
