Heritage Day Pulls in Crowds in Library Building Arnold's Heritage Event No2
The second Arnold Heritage event that took place on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd September in Arnold Library between 10.00 and 4.00pm each day was heralded as a great success by organisers and visitors alike.
Arnold Local Area Forum together with Arnold Library organised another highly successful photographic and heritage event in Arnold Library as a follow up, to the event held last March at Arnold library.
Old microfiche newspaper records, maps, historical Library photographic archives, books and research materials from the local studies section were complimented by an increased number of exhibitors who brought along numerous collections of old photographs and other memorabilia from Arnold's past.
Displays were this time spread out over a larger area in the library, allowing easier access by visitors. The two days were very well attended by residents and former residents of Arnold who descended upon the library in order to view records of the past or to engage in recalling various incidents and events that happened in Arnold decades ago.
New visitors to the event were invited to comment on the event and were invited to interest in establishing a local history society.
Photographic restoration was available during the event as well as the opportunity for visitors to record their reminiscences for posterity. These aspect will help to establish a comprehensive archive of old Arnold at the library. The next stage is to invite all those individuals who registered their interest in a history society to a general meeting where decisions on the type and format of such a group can be determined.
Thanks go to all the staff of the library for their enthusiasm and support; to members of Arnold LAF who volunteered their time during the event; to Ros Brown for the restoration service and Bob Massey for his reprographic service and exhibition material; to all the exhibitors who produced such a fine display. And finally to local caterers TASTY OPTIONS who again served up a feast of a buffet for one and all.
Arnold Library - More celebrations!2006 has been a busy year for Arnold Library with two anniversaries to celebrate. Our 25'h birthday (in our present building) took place in March, and in October we celebrated 100 years of service in Arnold.
To mark the occasion we displayed a selection of both adult and children's books which have delighted, excited and occasionally scandalised readers over the past 100 years.
On Families Love Libraries day we also launched a centenary family quiz covering famous people, events and, of course, books of the twentieth century. Winners wili be announced mid November.
Local junior schools were invited to visit the library during October to find out what life was like for a child in Arnold 100 years ago. Richard Bonington, Church Drive and Arnold View sent a total of 7 classes.
On 24th October we held a special birthday story and rhyme time with a Beatrix Potter theme. Around 30 under fives made Peter Rabbit shakers and ate gingerbread bunnies!
Something for Under fives Every Tuesday morning from 10.00 a.m. -10.30 a.m. the library holds a session for under 5s and their carers. From November onwards this will be a rhyme time only session, to reflect the needs of the very large number of babies who come along! However, for anyone with slightly older toddlers who are beginning to enjoy looking at books, there will be a monthly story time on the first Thursday of each month from 2.00 - 2.30 p.m.
The Reading Cafe
Everyone is very welcoine to join the Cafe on 13th December our Christmas fuddle. Please bring along your favourite book of 2006 to tell us about. We shall also have a quiz this month: "Eat, drink and be merry..." Appropriate prizes will be awarded! Our new programme will be out shortly and we'll be starting the new year with a discussion of "Comedy Classics." Please come along prepared to share something that has made you laugh whether it's a poem, a interest and information. In use here during novel, a TV play script or even a misprint in a newspaper! September's Heritage event. The Cafe opens every Wednesday morning from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, and is a great place to meet people and talk about books - and many other things besides! Programmed events are held in the library meeting room.
IT Sessions
This year we've been running 3 short introductory sessions a month on how to use a computer. These are aimed at people who want to familiarise themselves with the basics without sitting an exam. There has been a huge demand for this service and next year we hope to be able to increase the number of sessions on offer. Dates for the new sessions will be posted in the library in early
December. -
Want to know more? Earlier in the year we held an open day at the library where people could book onto guided tours and see behind the scenes. This proved a popular move and we hope to repeat the event in 2007. Meanwhile, if you belong to a group or society that would be interested either in visiting the library, or having a speaker, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
