Welcome to Arnold Forum

When we last went to print Arnold Carnival was upon us.

This year’s Carnival was a great success with more than 28,000 people descending on Arnot Hill Park over the two days. Both professional and community groups also took to the stage to entertain. It included performances from Take on That, The Rolling Clones, the Bogus Brothers and the original members of The Real Thing, who had 70’s hits such as “You To Me Are Everything”, “Can’t Get By Without You” and “Feel The Force”. A variety of activities were available for people of all ages

Arnold Churches Together paraded through the town centre on Saturday afternoon, led by the Boy’s Brigade Band. Over 1,000 people took part and for those who were unable to complete the route, Hearson’s Coaches provided a 1920s open top bus so they could join in.

Responding to some recent feedback forms

Ms L Cross from central Arnold writes about the opportunity to utilise Church Drive school for both young and older people particularly with daytime activities. Another suggestion is that of additional bins for litter in areas slightly away from the town centre.

Ms R Reid from Woodthorpe suggests using the Church Drive school for adult education classes from Workers Education Association (WEA).

Ms A.Masters from Daybrook wrote to support the letter from Mrs H of Woodthorpe about an older persons club in Arnold. She also suggested that a library/meeting room in Daybrook would be appreciated and that the opportunity of potentially using Church Drive school would benefit the deprived area of Daybrook.

Editorial response

The three comments expressed above have clearly hit a cord amongst the residents of Arnold in regard to developing this opportunity of a community asset such as the vacated school. The Steering committee of Arnold Local Area Forum are currently investigating a number of strands related to the acquisition of such an asset involving expressions of interest by groups and organisations, possible funding streams for capital costs, public and local neighbourhood consultation, formation of an accountable body and a business plan. The committee are to seek involvement and participation from local groups and representatives from the community in drawing up firm proposals. The Forum will be keeping readers updated as developments occur.
